JEREMY BROOD
PART l: "Relativity"

WRITTEN BY
JAN STRNAD

Hello, and WELCOME to ENCOUNTER 6, the FAN
ADVENTURE. We have worked very hard to make
sure that both the casual observer and the
serious -fan will find plenty of things of
interest.

This year we are using the Hilton's full
convention facilities and we greatly appre¬
ciate their supportive cooperation. (The
entire facilities of our first Encounter
would easily fit into this year's Dealer
Room. )

The Harbringer of good fortune has brought us
our finest guest lineup, ever. We want to
welcome back Jan Strnad and Rick Stasi , and
welcome, for the first time, Richard Corben,
Gil Kane and C.J. Cherryh.

This year we have changed our charity and
have discovered resources that we never
dreamed would be available to us. The
continued backing by Rex Henderson, of the
Kansas Easter Seals Society, was a big help
this year and will bring great changes to
next year's Fan Adventure.

Dreams of conventions past are coming true
this year. We have now achieved a level of
legitimacy that will, with your continued
help, can be the key to all our future
dreams.

SPECIAU GUESTS

RICHARD CORBEN is a new visitor to the
Wichita -fan scene, and we know that you will
all welcome one of the most dynamic artists
currently working in the illustration and
comics scenes.

Richard has been drawing and painting for
years, after discovering the initial
guidelines for his "style 14 in the Tarzan
illustrations of Jessie Marsh. His first
published artwork appeared in amateur
fanzines, including two from Wichita, 6QUA
TRONT and Jan Strnad's ANOMOLY, and his own
fanzine, FANTAGOR.

His first professional publication was a 1966
cover for THE FANTASY AND SCIENCE FICTION
MAGAZINE, followed by five years of work for
the "underground” comics. He followed this by
cover, and then interior, work for Warren
Publishing. He has also done a number of
record jacket paintings, and has contributed
dustcover paintings for many Science Fiction
Book Club books. Working at HEAVY METAL, he
has produced the popular DEN and DEN II
series, and (with Jan Strnad) THE NEW TALES
OF THE ARABIAN NIGHTS.

The first book of his JEREMY BROOD, a trilogy
of books to be written by Jan Strnad, is due
out soon, and promises to be up to his usual
standard of dynamic figure positioning, and
detailed air-brushed artistry.

JAN STRNAD, established Wichita fan, writer,
and editor, is making his third FANDOM
appearance, at ENCOUNTER 6.

Jan started out as a comics collector, during
the 1960s. In 1969, he began publishing
ANOMOLY, a black-and-white fanzine featuring
some of his early stories.

In 1972, Jan sold his first story to Warren
Publishing, for their black-and-white EERIE
and CREEPY titles. Since then, he has written
for some of Warren’s most popular artists,
including Richard Corben, who he had
initially met through ANOMOLY.

Jan has worked with Richard on various other
projects, including the HEAVY METAL color
feature, NEW TALES OF THE ARABIAN NIGHTS.
Jan recently wrote several stories for Marvel
Comics, and is currently working with artist
Gil Kane, on an ATOM mini-series for D.C. He
has also completed the first JEREMY BROOD
book, and has created a new color comic,
DELGODA, for Fantagraphics, which should be
out next year.

Pig« iO

SPECIAL QUESTS

GIL KANE has been working in mainstream
comics for over 40 years. His earliest
credits include art on Street and Smith’s RED
HAWK, Timely’s (Marvel’s) VISION and YOUNG
ALLIES (1943-44), and National/D.C.’s WILDCAT
and SANDMAN (1947-48). He also worked for a
number of less-known comics houses.

When D.C. decided to "revive" their GREEN
LANTERN and ATOM titles in the early 1960s,
Gil was chosen as the premier artist. His
extremely clean and dynamic art style caught
on with the fans, and he stayed on to produce
roughly the first 70 GREEN LANTERN
stories, and covers and interiors for the
first 37 ATOM books.

Since then, he has done extensive work for
both Marvel and D.C. (including SPIDER-MAN
and CONAN), and has done covers for virtually
all of the established titles. He is also the
co-creator of a syndicated sci-fi newspaper
strip, STAR HAWKS.

Gil wil return to THE ATOM with SWORD OF THE
ATOM, a new mini-series to be written by Jan
Strnad. The title is due from D.C. Comics,
early next year.

C.J. CHERRYH can accurately be described as a
successful writer. One of her first two
"professionally" sold works, written while
she was employed by the Oklahoma City school
system, earned her the John W. Campbell Award
as the Best New Writer for 1977.

She has since recieved a Nebula Award, two
Nebula nominations, two Hugos, and has
currently been nominated for the World
Fantasy Award in the Best Novella category.
Her latest Hugo was awarded for her novel ,
DOWN UNDER STATION.

RICK STASI learned to draw by copying what he
saw in comic books. Years later, he divides
his time by working as an advertising artist
in Kansas City and producing work as a "fan
artist. "

Rick has handled a number of "professional"
assignments, including covers for THE BUYERS’
GUIDE and ALL-STAR COMICS REVIEW, and 10-foot
character signs for a K.C. comics store. Most
recently, Rick created and published a four-
color, original portfolio, THE WARRIOR AND
THE ORACLE SWORD, which he hopes to market to
mainstream comics.

Rick will be in the Dealers’ Room, doing
color and black-and-white character sketches
for the fans. Page \\
